Two collectives, participants of the 30th edition of the Curatorial Programme (CP) of de Appel Amsterdam, are staying and working in the m4gastatelier. The collectives practice and learn about Lumbung, the self-organized and socio-political artistic and curatorial practice.
The CP includes a series of workshops, sessions and collective work, punctuated by intensive site visits and research.
Collectives at m4gastatelier: Dash, Isfahan (Iran) with artists Emili Allahbeigi and Tara Jamali and Biquini Wax, (Mexico) with artists Mili Herrera, Denisse Vega and Gerardo Contreras
Lumbung is a rural pre-colonial practice (and architecture) in which the village stores the surplus of the harvest for the future well-being of the community. It is where the surplus is collectively managed and celebrated. During Documenta 15 (2023), the artist collective Ruangrupa, responsible for co-curating Documenta 15, introduced and practiced Lumbung along with other artistic and social collective practices. After Documenta 15, Lumbung has come to mean: a collective of collectives, a set of self-organized practices of the commons worldwide, a social discourse on art that emerges from interlocal heritage and aesthetic quality.
