The past years Sylvie Zijlmans and Hewald Jongenelis have been working on their project "The Magnetic North" with current topics that occupy the inhabitants of a busy urban environment: gentrification, immigration, refugees, fear of change, appropriation of space and claiming freedom.Through extensive conversations with residents of Amsterdam North Zijlmans and Jongenelis have captured these subjects in iconic and confrontational performances with titles such as "De Dichter, who put everything closer together" or "De Conservator, who can not stand change". Up to now, more than 100 inhabitants of Amsterdam North have participated in this project. They took part in the conversations and where involved as performers in the slightly disruptive actions that took place in their own streets.
The films and images of “The Magnetic North" were shown in Nieuw Dakota in Amsterdam-North in 2015 and in 2017 at the Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen in Rotterdam. At the moment, the monumental and anarchistic red-black ink drawings that Zijlmans and Jongenelis made during “The Magnetic North” are on show at Andriesse Eyck Gallery (Leliegracht Amsterdam).
